  • Contemporary Issues in Applied Economics
    Hosoe, M., Ju, B.-G., Yakita, A., Hong, K. (Eds.)
”Welfare Effects of Public Education and National Security”, Springer, 2019, 9811370354, An important feature of this book is its analysis of various contemporary issues in applied economics, distinguished by advanced theoretical research and empirical analysis focusing on Japan and Korea. The book consists of four parts, the first of which investigates economic growth and welfare, using tools of applied analysis. In Part II, it examines inequality, redistribution, and intergenerational transfers, mainly on an empirical basis. In turn, Part III explores public policy and political economics, while Part IV addresses resource and environmental economics on the basis of data from Japan and Korea. In addition to offering valuable insights, this collection of papers commemorates the 10th anniversary of academic exchange between the Japan Association for Applied Economics (JAAE) and the Korean Association for Applied Economics (KAAE).

  • Welfare Effects of\\ Public Education and National Security
    Tatsuya OMORI
2018 Fall conference of Japan Association for Applied Economics, 2018, Single Work, By introducing national security for national risk into an overlapping-generations model with public education, we study how these security policies affect social welfare. We demonstrate that when the positive benefit effects on welfare are greater than the negative tax effects on welfare, a higher tax rate enhances social welfare. We also show that changing allocation of public funds from national security to public investment in education enhances social welfare. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the cross effects of two policies on welfare are positive when the growth rate of human capital is greater than one.
