  • Agritourism, the Inflow of Foreign Workers and Economic Welfare in a Developed Country
    Kenji Kondoh
62nd ERSA Congress, 2023, Joint Work, refereed, Speaker, European Regional Science Association, Alicante, Spain, This study examines the effects of labor inflow into a developed country with the agritourism sector under free trade and capital movement. The country comprises two regions: an urban area where the manufacturing sector is located, and a rural area where both the agricultural and agritourism sectors are located. We assume free labor mobility between the two areas and structural, frictional unemployment in the urban area. We demonstrate that under environmentally friendly agritourism and other reasonable assumptions, additional inflow of permanent immigrants without remittance will enhance the natural environment, the rural wage rate, and domestic welfare, and will reduce the urban unemployment rate and urban-rural wage gap. However, additional inflow of cross-border commuter workers who remit all their income to the home country will not cause any changes to the economy of the host country.

    Kenji Kondoh
10th International Conference on Economics of Global Interactions: New Perspectives on Trade, Factor Mobility and Development, 2019, Single Work, refereed, Presenter, University of Bari, Aldo Moro, Bari, Italy, We consider two types of illegal migrants to a developed country based on the expected lifetime income: low-risk entrance with high-risk of detection during their stay (type A) and high-risk entrance with low-risk of detection (type B). Also following new immigration policy introduced by Japan’s government in 2019, we consider two types of legal unskilled immigrants, limited staying period without their families (specific skills #1) and permitted permanent stay with their families (specific skills #2). We consider three possible cases co-existing those various types of migrants as the results of each individual’s choice. If all of four types of immigrants exist, paradoxically, we found that policies encouraging introduction of type B illegal immigrants will be the most preferable restriction policies for the host country which intends to improve both foreign workers’ quality and economic welfare of domestic residents.

Competitive Funding, Economic Policy, Multilateral Economic Partnership Agreements and Globalization of Labor Market, 2013, 2013.4, 2016.3, 25380340, We investigate the economy of a small country that exports skilled labor to more-developed countries and simultaneously imports unskilled labor from less-developed countries. If this country adopts an optimal immigration policy by imposing an income tax on immigrants that maximizes national income, skills formation will be negatively affected. Moreover, under certain conditions, we can assert that the wage gap between domestic skilled/unskilled workers will increase owing to the restriction on foreign unskilled workers. We also build a simple three-country model where two rich countries with different immigration policies receive immigrants from a third, developing country. We consider the effects of economic integration in the form of the free mobility of native workers: we show that under certain conditions, the wage gap between the two developed countries is crucial, whether the integration outcome is win-win or lose-lose.

Competitive Funding, Theoretical Analysis on the Effects of FTA in Asia on the Industrial Structure and Income Differential, 2007, 2007.4, 2010.3, 19530210, The economic effects of liberalization of trade and international factor movements due to FTA have been analyzed theoretically. As a result, trade liberalization and an inflow of capital or labor have an important influence on unemployment and skilled-unskilled wage differential. For example, trade liberalization reduces the wage gap and unemployment under certain conditions, and trade liberalization is preferable to international factor movement for the policy goals.

We also find the possibility that pollution abatement equipments industry can help to realize global gain from international migration. On the other hand, we also find that under the consideration of urban unemployment, immigration of skilled or unskilled workers might expand domestic wage gap.

Competitive Funding, Applied Economics, Teansboundary Pollution and International Migration, 2003, 2003.4, 2005.3, 15530167, We analyse the welfare effects of international migration in the presence of trans-boundary pollution. We use a simplified Copeland and Taylor (1999) model, where the (developed) home country's pollution abatement technology is superior to that of the (less developed) foreign country. If there is no trade, workers will migrate from the foreign country to the home country. The foreign country gains from migration, but whether the home country gains or not depends on the abatement-technology gap and the magnitude of the coefficient of trans-boundary pollution. World welfare will increase under migration. If there is free trade in goods, international migration occurs when the home country specializes in the production of the environmentally sensitive good. In this case, migration will result in increased production of the manufactured good and increase the level of world pollution.
